Analysis of Medical Waste Management in Hospital

Abstract

Introduction: Based on the monitoring results of the Directorate General of Waste, Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management in 2022, the amount of solid medical waste generated was 55,063,993.82 tons with a breakdown of the amount of managed waste of 55,060,917.97 tons and unmanaged waste of 3,075.84 tons. RAA Soewondo Regional General Hospital, Pati Regency, Indonesia  produces solid hazardous medical waste generated on average 4,277 kg per month and an average annual amount of 53,031.98 kg.


Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the management of solid hazardous medical waste at RAA Soewondo Regional General Hospital, Pati Regency, Indonesia.


Methods: This type of research uses a mixed methods method, namely a quantitative approach combined with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through interviews and observation sheets. The number of informants in this study was 7 people.


Results: The process of managing solid hazardous medical waste in this hospital is sorting, containing, and transporting. Final processing and processing is carried out by a third party and transported every 2-3 days. However, there is no dedicated lane for transporting waste to the hazardous waste disposal site (TPS B3), the wheelie bin does not have a hazardous waste symbol, and the TPS B3 does not meet ideal standards. Some healthcare workers rarely use goggles.


Conclusion: Management of solid hazardous waste at the RAA Soewondo Regional Hospital is in accordance with regulations and is running well, with an average generation of 140.6 kg/day or 4,276.83 kg/month. Routine supervision and procedures have been implemented, but improvements in facilities, human resources, and compliance with PPE use are needed.
